Pigmentation Treatments

Laser pigmentation treatments utilise concentrated light energy to break down excess melanin in the skin, allowing the body to eliminate it and enhancing the appearance of age spots, sun damage, melasma, and pigmentation issues. This process is based on photo-thermolysis, where specific wavelengths are absorbed melanin to heat and fragment the pigment while minimising damage to surrounding tissues.

Treatment and Expectations

Most pigmentation concerns typically require several, often between 2 to 5 sessions , spaced a few weeks apart.

Improvements are gradual; some lesions may clear quickly while others may take months to fade. Maintenance or repeat treatments may be necessary due to the potential for pigmentation to recur with sun exposure or hormonal changes.

Potential risks include temporary redness and swelling, blistering, infection, and post-treatment hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, particularly in darker Fitzpatrick skin types.

Melasma can be particularly challenging; while lasers may help, they also have the potential to worsen the condition if not applied carefully.

Proper device selection, conservative settings, and thorough skin preparation can reduce complications.

A qualified laser specialist should assess pigment type and skin tone to determine the safest and effective treatment.

Pre-Treatment (1–4 Weeks Prior)

Consultation/Patch Test: - Confirm device settings and conduct a patch test.

Sun Avoidance -  Steer clear of direct sunlight and tanning; use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily, I recommend Aspect 50+ SPF which is available in my online store.

Stop Irritants - Discontinue topical retinoids, strong AHAs/BAs, and bleaching agents 3–7 days before the treatment (or as directed).

Inform your clinician about any photosensitising medications; stop only if advised and agreed to by your doctor.

If prone to recurrent herpes simplex, start antiviral prophylaxis as recommended.

Avoid Other Procedures -  No waxing, resurfacing treatments, or peels on the treated area for 2–4 weeks prior.

Arrive Clean - Ensure your skin is clean, free of makeup, perfumes, or creams.

Immediate Post-Treatment (First 24–72 Hours)

Expect -  Redness, mild swelling, pinpoint crusting, and temporary darkening of spots are normal.

Cooling - During the treatments, ice cold air is applied to the treatment area for your comfort. applying a cool compresses for comfort if needed is fine, however, avoid direct ice contact with skin.

Cleansing/Moisturising - A  gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and a thin layer of prescribed ointment as directed followed by spf 50+ (apply by gently patting onto the skin, no rubbing)

Avoid Picking - Do not pick or scratch at crusts or scabs.

Makeup - Refrain from using makeup for at least 24 -36 hours or until cleared by your clinician.

Activity - Avoid heavy exercise, saunas, and hot baths that may increase blood flow to the area for 48–72 hours.

Short-Term Care (Days 3–14)

Sunscreen - Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily and reapply every 2 hours when outdoors; physical sunscreens are preferred.

Wear a hat and sun-protective clothing.

Avoid high intense Activities

Hold on retinol, AHAs/BHAs, and bleaching agents until cleared by your clinician (typically 7–14 days).

Moisturise - Continue using gentle, soothing moisturisers.

Avoid Other Procedures - Refrain from waxing, facial treatments, or other laser procedures on the treated area until fully healed.
